Motion Graphics

What has been most gratifying for me as an instructor of motion graphics has been in designing assignments that encompass many aspects of visual culture. My favorite motion graphics projects are title sequences mainly because I've found that this assignment allows students to build upon their own skills and interests, whether it's adding motion text to video footage that they've shot or in exploring the interaction of graphics without video footage. The two samples here show both strategies. However, the first main project I assign students is the Kinetic Text assignment, in which students select a 30 second snippet of audio and animate the text to correlate with the speaker. Special attention is paid to the choice of typeface as well as movement and rhythm to best capture the tone of the speaker. Lastly, for more advanced students, we have integrated motion graphics into a commercial spot for a client (Novel Brewery) as well as a music video for a band in the Bay Area.
